Last week, Presidential candidate John McCain stated that Iran was supporting al-Qaeda. His campaign made that implication multiple times, but there is no connection between Shiite Iran and Sunni-dominated al-Qaeda. Is McCain senile, or is he laying the groundwork for action against Iran if he's elected?
Seriously, this guy is just as bad as VP Dick Cheney who is still insisting that there was a connection between Saddam and al-Qaeda. Is that the choice we're faced with this fall? On one hand, we've got a senile old guy who can't figure out the difference between Shiites and Sunnis, and on the other we've got a couple candidates who understand the problems and actors and want to decrease the US military footprint in the Middle East.
I know which side I'm coming down on.
Iran may not support Al-Qaeda, but it is indisputable that it supports
terrorism against Israel. Al Qaeda's original intentions were not
terrorize the US, but to terrorize the Soviets, then later Israel, and now
the US for its support of Israel. It is not improbable that terrorists
operating in Palestine with Iranian support will eventually turn their
attention to the US. It's very difficult to sell preventive military
action in a democracy, but only honest politicians are willing to advocate
for it.
So, K Dub, you're a proponent of the 1% doctrine? That if there's even a 1%
chance that something bad could happen, the US should act? Please... Iran
is no threat to the US, yet. If they ever restart their nuclear weapons
program that could change, but they haven't.
