The Supreme Court recently ruled on some pretty important cases. Most importantly, they ruled that it is illegal for the President of the United States to secretly and indefinitely detain US citizens. Bravo!
My question is: Why would the President want that power, anyhow?
Even conservatives were a little nervous about giving the President the power to make US citizens disappear, though their line was - Well, it's all getting reviewed. That's why there are checks and balances, right? - Sure. But who thought we'd ever need them on an issue like this? What's next? Quartering armed military police in the homes of Democrats?
The case I was most interested in, Rumsfeld v. Padilla, got sent back to the minor leagues on a technicality. That was a little cowardly of the court in my opinion. Let's continue to keep our eyes on that case.
