A new study of captured official Saddam Hussein documents yields... no connection between Saddam and al-Qaeda. Despite Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's assurances of 'bulletproof" evidence of a connection, none existed.
Now, President Bush claims he never made a connection between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, but he never stood up and told the truth either. He could have said, "Despite what Don says about 'bulletproof' evidence, the fact is, we simply don't have anything concrete linking Saddam to al-Qaeda." But that didn't happen, did it?
Now, we hear the Bush administration starting a drumbeat for war against Iran, despite the fact that the latest National Intelligence Estimate says Iran stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003.
Why is this coming up on my radar now? Because of the resignation of William "Fox" Fallon, the CENTCOM Commander. In a recent Esquire article, Thomas P.M. Barnett asserts,
"...well-placed observers now say that it will come as no surprise if Fallon is relieved of his command before his time is up next spring, maybe as early as this summer, in favor of a commander the White House considers to be more pliable. If that were to happen, it may well mean that the president and vice-president intend to take military action against Iran before the end of this year and don't want a commander standing in their way."
Was Fallon pushed out of the way for his pragmatic views on Iran?
