Quick Poll

Why do they hate us?
Because of our foreign policy
For our freedoms
Because their religion tells them to
They are inscrutable

I picked up this book a few weeks ago. I couldn't find it in the library, so I grudgingly paid money for it. About three-quarters through the book, I lost it in a taxi, but at that point I had no problems shelling out cash for it again (plus, the library still didn't carry it). I hope Whitman uses all the money to get moderate Republicans elected to leadership positions. I may even contribute to a few moderate GOP challengers myself. After reading this book, there oughtta be quite a few challengers for DeLay and Frist's seats.

After laying out all the goodness of traditional conservative values, Whitman fingers the culprits in the radicalization of the GOP. Her book is a call to arms for conservatives to wrest control of the Republican Party from the "social fundamentalists" who have infiltrated the party leadership and saddled the country with massive debt, runaway spending, a wacko liberal plan to free the world, and harmful environmental and tax policies that favor large corporate donors over the average Joe.

Whitman presents a fascinating little recent history of the GOP from her point of view - I really enjoyed her reminiscences of Republican conventions past and the insider's look at Goldwater's controversial nomination, as well as interesting tales of her personal history in Republican politics - and then she provides a roadmap for putting the Republican Party back on the conservative path. She also lays out a plan to earn for the party a true mandate from American voters at the national level, as opposed to the slim majorities they've been winning by pandering to social fundamentalists.

If you're a conservative (and I really am on issues like fiscal and foreign policy) and you're disturbed by where the Republican Party has taken America with record deficits, runaway government growth, getting too entangled in other countries problems, eroding state's rights, and forsaking conservationism, check out Whitman's web site and help make the GOP a conservative party once again. Please.

I just remembered the most unintentionally funny part in the book. Whitman talks about how Bush flip-flopped on carbon dioxide reductions and stabbed her in the back over the Kyoto protocol,

As soon as I got in my car for the four-block ride back to EPA headquarters...

I guess she was in too big of a hurry to walk. Too much damage control to do? :)

In another interesting passage, she talks about a summit in Trieste, Italy:

About halfway across the square I spotted David Anderson ,Canada's environmental minister, coming toward us. I was struck by the fact that he was alone and I wondered how he was able to shake his security detail. When we met up, I asked him right away, "David, where's your security?" He replied with a smile. "I don't need any - no one hates Canada."

As I said, it's a good book.
