After suffering a third straight loss in Congressional special elections this year, Republicans are in a tizzy. Do they become more moderate? Or more ideological? Do they embrace President Bush? Or disavow him?
Rep. Ric Keller (Fla.), routinely targeted by Democrats in his Orlando district, said that Republicans from swing districts need the latitude to seek more moderate solutions, to be "independent folks who are trying to solve problems."
Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.), however, said the GOP needs to be more true to its conservative grass roots.
And [Rep. Tom] Cole [(Okla.)] rejected the notion of a dramatic break with Bush. "I don't see it particularly as an advantage to be in a debate with our president," he said. "It's not for me to second-guess the president of the United States."
Ahh... What to do, what to do? I'll tell you what to do: sit down and hold on tight, 'cause you guys backed -- and are still backing -- President Bush into a permanent Democratic majority. As you sow, so shall you reap. And Republicans have no one to blame but themselves.
