I was watching CNN International over the weekend and saw some of the UK war dead being brought home from Iraq. There was a lot of ceremony, bright uniforms, and precision marching, and as the music played over the images, the commentator talked about the long tradition of British soldiers serving overseas.
Then the contrast was made with the repatriation of US troops who had sacrificed all for their country. One British dignitary stated that the public would be outraged if the bodies of British soldiers were flown in and interred in the dead of night, as if they were something to be ashamed of.

How sad it is that the Bush administration wants to hide our dead. How sad
that they don't want people here to think of war=death. Sanitized for your
protection?
It's pretty sad that this issue is being used as a political weapon by some
on both sides.
The people of this country are proud of our soldiers. Thier families and loved ones need to know that. Those still serving overseas need to know that.
Whether the cause was right or wrong or somewhere in between, it's shameful that this is the way they're returned to the country for which they've given everything.
